National conference of Kamaiya workers held in January 1996 formed Kamaiya liberation forum. GEFONT felt that trade union movement should organise and mobilise the vast majority of rural agricultural wage earners. With this aim, Agri-workers national gathering was organised in May 3-5 1996 and established Federation of Agricultural workers-Nepal. This Union has been registered in Labour Department in 14 March, 2003.
The Union Covers all the workers of Agricultural field like plough man, shepherds, farmers, farm workers including wage or contract agri-workers. At present, the union has its hold upon 6 zonal committees, 23 district committees, 1 central Women Department, some district women department, 64 Area Committees and 204 Village Committees.

Even though Tea-plantation had been established during the Rana regime, Mainly the expansion of tea-plantation started Jhapa district since1959. Due to the then autocracy panchayat system the workers were unable to unionise. After the establishment of multi-party system in 1990, tea-plantation workers of Jhapa district organised a conference in New-Giri & Sons tea estate on May 30, 1990 and formed a district adhoc Committee of Nepal Independent tea-plantation workers Union. Like wise Illam district committee was also formed. Right after, central level conference being held in Tokla tea estate and formed 11 members central adhoc committee under the presidentship of Rupchan Uraau.
In the eastern hilly region of Nepal, tea-plantation is expanding day by day. Above than 12 thousands workers working only in Jhpa and Illam district.
Printing-press workers gathering on February 8, 1980 formed Kathmandu valley committee of the Independent Press Workers Union of Nepal (IPWUN). On April 25-26, 1980 the committee held the first valley conference in Itumbahal. After this conference, the union started expanding in other parts of Nepal and on February 2, 1991, a gathering of nationwide press workers formed the Central organizing committee of IPWUN.
Teachers and employees of private and boarding are organised under Private and Boarding School Employees Union (PABSEU). The Union is established with the aim to safeguard the rights of the employees working in private and boarding schools as the existing teachers’ unions limited themselves to public schools after the amendment of the Education Act. PABSEU was established in April 19, 2003 from a national conference. Representatives from 10 zones participated in the conference and formed PABSEU central committee of 14 members.
GEFONT has launched a new initiative to organise employees in private financial institution, Bank, finance and cooperatives under the banner of Bank, Finance and Cooperative Sector Employee Union (BAFSEU). It has established on 2nd April 2016.
In the history of trade union movement of Nepal, after the first generation of movement in 1947, the workers movement was limited to enterprise and local level. The movement of 1979 along with the historical student movement rose up in several cities of Nepal like Kathmandu, Hetauda and Biratnagar. The workers involved in those movements organised first National Meeting on January 29, 1980 and formed Nepal Independent Workers Union (NIWU). This union is the oldest union of GEFONT family. First affiliate among the four founding unions of GEFONT; this affiliate was also recognised as first legally registered Trade Union Federation in Department of Labour.
Two trade union federations with their own historical background - Independent Textile Garment Workers’ Union of Nepal (ITGWUN) and Nepal Independent Carpet Workers’ Union (NICWU) were merged into one union Jute, Textile, Garment and Carpet Workers’ Union Nepal (JTG-CWUN) through a merger convention held on September 26, 2012. The union organises workers from garment, carpet, textile, spinning, hosier, washing, dyeing, embroidery, boutique, pashmina and similar sectors. 
Workers from transport sector had initiated the movement for their rights with the beginning of the public transport. On June 23, 1979 transport workers organised a national gathering in Panipiya of Sunsari district and formed Independent Transport Workers’ Association of Nepal (ITWAN).
In April 2, 1994 motorbike auto mechanics formed Nepal Motorbike Workshop Workers Union. With in two years, in April 6, 1996 motor mechanics formed Independent Auto Mechanics Workers Union. These two unions merged to form Nepal Auto Mechanics Trade Union (NATU) in July 19, 1997. This is an unique union, which has mainly skilled human resources- the mechanics!
In order to protect the professional rights of the workers in the field of Rickshaw-pulling; Nepal Rickshaw Pullers' Union was established in 5th April 1997 by organising conference held on Hetaunda.
NIHWU is the federation of workers engaged in Hotels, Motel, Jungle Lodges, Fast food, Guest house, Club, Restaurant, and Catering Service, ranging from small tea/coffee shops to renowned 'Star' Hotels. It was established in 1981. NIHWU is the federation, which has been handling a number of enterprise level movements every year. It has successfully organised many national level movements, latest one is successful movement to levy 10% service charge in HRCT sectors.
Trekking workers are those engaged in hard works as porters and guides to trekkers, climbers and submitters. No regime in the past honoured the contribution of these dedicated trekking workers. The Trekking Workers Association of Nepal was founded in April 1983 as the only federation of its kind in the country.
CUPPEC- Nepal is a national federation of the workers of construction sector. It was launched in May 31, 1997 by unifying four different federations in construction sector- Nepal independents electricity workers' union, Nepal independent Painters' union, Independent plumbers' union and Nepal independent Construction workers' union.
Nepal Street Vendors Union (NEST) organises self-employed in streets vendors including cleaning utensils, fixing stoves, selling vegetables and fruits, clothes on footpath on mat or floor.
There are thousands of workers insecurity service in various privately run security companies. They have been employed from private houses to offices, banks, and even in the missions of United Nations. To raise the organised voice to increase the salary and benefits, the union was established in 2004 and has been registered under the department of labour as the 127th federation.
Nepal Garbage Cleaners Employee Union (NGCEU) was established in June 15, 1990 as Independent Garbage Cleaners Union of Nepal (IGCUN).
Significant number of workforce is involved in home-based work. Domestic workers, metal craftsmen, Thanka artists, idol makers form a huge part of workforce in Nepal and are vulnerable to labour exploitation. GEFONT led a campaign to organise the home based workers who were not included in any labour legislation and formed Nepal home based workers union, Nepal Independent Domestic workers union, Nepal Thanka Artists Union and Nepal Gold and Silver works Trade Union. Realising the importance of united front for significant impact, these four unions were merged to form one union – Home Workers’ Trade Union of Nepal (HUN). It is only affiliates of International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF) in Nepal.
In October 7, 2004 a Conference of barbers and hairdresser was organised to form Barbers' Trade Union. The union was registered at the Department of Labour in 2005 as 109th National Federation with 6084 members.
NABUN is the Federation for the workers of beauty parlour and cosmetics sectors. Since such businesses have been thriving in the urban areas, the number of workers in the field is remarkably increasing. Both self-employed and wager-labours are associated in the Federation. This has been remained as one of the Federations of informal sector.
This Federation was formed recently with a view to guarantee the professional rights to the employees and health workers working at private health centres, nursing homes and hospitals. Previously, the workers in such sectors were partially organised either in Nepal Independent Chemical-Iron Workers' Union or in Nepal Independent Workers' Union.
Nepal Health Volunteers Association (NEVA) was established in February 15, 2010 from first national conference of health volunteers. It aims to safeguard the rights of health volunteers trained with skills to give polio vaccine, vitamin and midwife and working in all parts of the country. The union has been registered in Department of Labour. The first national Convention of the union was held in March 5, 2011.
