The flag of New GUF to be hoisted at Mt Everest

April-01 –The flag of new GUF – IndustriALL will be hoisted at top of the world the Mt. Everest. In a brief ceremony organised at Kathmandu GEFONT President Cde Bishnu Rimal handed over the Flag to Cde Dorje Khatri. Cde Khatri is the central committee member of GEFONT affiliates UNITRAV, this expedition at Mt Everest is his 8th attempt.

Cde Khatri had successfully completed previous 7 attempts, last year he had hoisted ITUC's flag under GEFONT coordinated campaign ITUC @Mt Everest 2011. 

"I will leave Kathmandu on April 03 in a bid to conquer Mt Everest once again", said Cde Dorje-"I will scale the top of the world, in between May 15-25, 2012; through South Col bordering to China. I will be back by June 05 in Kathmandu."

"I am confident that you will be successful once again to plant another flag of world working class", GEFONT President Cde Rimal expressed his best wishes on behalf of GEFONT NEC and entire Nepali working class.

Cde Dorje will scale the Everest with UK team-UK Adventure Peak , the same group which was together with him last year. He has successfully carried on the flags of GEFONT and some the affiliates; BWI and IMF earlier.

If everything moves as per plan, It is expected that Cde Dorje will hand over the same flag to would be General Secretary of IndustriALL during its founding Congress to be held in Copenhagen in June 19-20, 2012.

Honouring the secrecy of the yet to be launched New GUF, the flag was made secret during the handover ceremony. The rolled flag was handed over to Cde Dorje by GEFONT president Cde Rimal.

It is expected that this campaign would be another efforts for Save Himalayas- Save Climate campaign.

About GEFONT

General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) was established on 20th July 1989. As there was no union right in Nepal; GEFONT was launched underground.

 

GEFONT has 27 affiliates (as of April, 2009), which cover all three fields- the agriculture, industries and services; covering various sectors such as manufacturing, textiles and clothing, carpet industry, transport, hotels, restaurants and catering, tourism, printing, auto-mechanics, food production, breweries, chemical and metal industry, rickshaw pullers, tea plantations, street vendors, private school, hair dressers & beauticians, employees of security sector, thanka painting, tax- counselling, courier & cargo service, gold & jewellery work, construction and agriculture.

 

As a largest trade union Confederation in Nepal, GEFONT represents over 300,000 workers from all affiliates.

 

Over 33% women have been elected in National Executive Committee of GEFONT from its 5th National Congress.

 

GEFONT is one the founders of international trade union body- the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) established on November 2006. It has been elected in General Council both at International and Asia-Pacific Regional level from the founding Congress. GEFONT affiliates are affiliated with various Global Union Federations (GUFs).

National Gathering of Union President of big Enterprises [top]

March 15 – Two days National Gathering of GEFONT affiliate Union President of big Enterprises has been concluded in Lalitpur with the aim of strengthening the Unions in Industrial Enterprises.

In the programme, as a chief guest, Cde. Bishnu Rimal-President of GEFONT highlighted the  importance of the programme. "Nepal is now in Constitution making process. In this  juncture, this kind of gathering not only help to  strengthen and expansion of the union, also help to create the favourable environment to incorporate the labour rights in new constitution and ensure the workers representation in  every structure of the state as well." said President Cde. Bishnu Rimal.

89 workers say good bye to HPL [top]

March 22 –89 expelled workers of HPL have received compensation and certificate of appreciation from the management during a farewell programme.  A farewell programme has been organised  jointly  by union and management of KSPL and HPL.

In the Programme, Cde. Bishnu Rimal, President of GEFONT said " Its the achievement of our continue  struggle. The workers who got the compensation should be utilized for personal betterment."  President further added-" Wherever you work or live, GEFONT will always with you and also hope your continue contribution in Trade union movement."

New leadership in GSG, Malaysia [top]

March 26 –Cde. Janak Bk has  become a new President of  GEFONT Support Group of Malaysia. Former President Cde.Ganesh Gautam has returned back to Nepal due to untimely demise of his mother Mrs Radha Gautam.

The meeting of GEFONT Support Group Malaysia head committee held on 25 March,2012 decided to entrust the responsibility to Cde. Janak B K as a new acting President. GEFONT extends best wishes to new President  for the continue struggle for the betterment of Nepali Migrant workers in Malaysia.

March 26 - With the purpose of providing services, advice and assistance to migrant workers in Malaysia, a SMS Help-Line has been launched in Malaysia.

As part of cooperation agreement signed on January 02, 2012 between General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT), Nepal Trade Union Congress – Independent (NTUC-I), BWI Nepal Affiliates Council (NAC), Building and Wood Workers International (BWI), Union Network International (UNI Global Union), Public Services International (PSI), the Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) and Asosiasi Serikat Pekerja (ASPEK Indonesia), a  SMS HELP-Line service  is established.

UNITRAV demands with Government to withdraw decision

March 17 - GEFONT affiliate Union of Trekking Travel-Rafting Airlines Workers (UNITRAV) has demanded with the Government to withdraw its decision of providing financial aid to a Maoist team for Everest expedition, issuing the press release.

Nepal Government has decided to provide Rs 20 million from the state coffers to an Mt Everest expedition team involving Prakash Dahal, son of  Unified CPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and chairman's  former personal security guard.

Planning workshop of NATU concludes

March 24 – Planning workshop  of Nepal Auto-Mechanics Trade Union (NATU) has been concluded. The workshop held at Man Mohan Labor Building was Presided by Cde. Madhav Pandey,President of NATU.

The Program was inaugurated by Chief Guest Cde. Bishnu Rimal, President of GEFONT. In the inaugural session, as a chief guest, Cde. Bishnu Rimal  highlighted the  role of GEFONT in Nepali Trade Union movement . President praised NATU's role for raising the issue of the auto mechanics sector workers  and also wished to work with same passion in future.

Third ITWAN Tulsipur Unit Conference concludes

March 27 – Third GEFONT affiliate- Independent Transport Workers’ Association Nepal (ITWAN) Tulsipur Unit conference has been concluded in Dang, Rapti Zone.

The Conference elected Cde.Cudamani BK  as new president and Cde.Tara Bahadur Basnet as new secretary. The conference has elected 14 members Tulsipur Unit Committee for next three years.

March 24 - Cde. Man Bahadur Bote president and Cde.Yug Narayan Kumal member of GEFONT affiliate Nepal Independent Hotel, Casino & Restaurant Workers' Union (NIHWU) of Temple tiger jungle lodge Chitwan were terminated by the management from Feb.02 ,2012  without any valid reason.

Labour court directs Indian Airlines to implement the decision of Supreme Court

March 28 - Labour Court of Nepal directed to Indian Airlines to implement the supreme court decision by giving permanent appointment to 6 workers. If the desicision of Labour court is not implemented withing 45 days, Station Manager Indian airlines of Nepal  should be paid 2500 as a penalty and imprisoned for 30 days according to the labour Act, 2048 of Nepal.

March 29 - 70 Nepali workers who have been working since 2 years in Satochemifa Berhad, Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia received compensation in Malaysia in the initiation of GEFONT Support Group(GSG) Malaysia.

70 Nepali workers who went Malaysia before 2 years  through Himalayan Job Explore Pvt.Ltd Baneswor, Kathmandu, Nepal had been receiving salary much less than the Agreement.
