Rights at Work in the Informal Sector

Continuing the second session, Pat Horn of Streetnet International talked about Rights at Work in the context of the informal sector. There are fundamental rights demanded everywhere: The right to organise, recognition of our organisations, collective bargaining rights, protection from discrimination, protection against forced labour and child labour, and a healthy and safe working environment. But where there is an undemocratic ruling culture, the right to democracy, equality and public services must also be taken into account.

Second Plenary on Ending Poverty and Inequality

South Asian Regional Conference : Mamiko Kastumata, of RENGO, Japan, was chairperson of the second plenary. Umesh Upadhyaya of GEFONT presented a paper on Ending poverty and inequality. Achievement within five years on gender equality in South Asia

South Asian Regional Conference : The first plenary on the second day of the conference was chaired by Siv Mjaaland (ILO-SRO). The session dealt with the progress that has been made in South Asia in the past five years. After a brief introduction of all participants, Rehana Riyawala of SEWA (Self Employed Women's Association), India, gave an overview of some gender based indicators in South Asia.

Tripartite agreement fulfill workers demands

August 31- A tripartite agreement among local administration, factory owners and representatives of workers initiated by GEFONT, have succeed to fulfill workers demands.  Following the agreement, the  closed factories and industries in Bara, Parsa and Rautahat districts resumed operation.

Police attack in picket line: Two GEFONT member shot-dead

August 30  - It's an irony that in the eve of formation of left dominated first Government of Federal Democratic Republic, two GEFONT members have been shot-dead and over dozens injured by police action at Bara districts, the Central South of the country. The incident broke when the police mercilessly attacked at the picket line in one of the iron-steel company- the Narayani Rolling Mlls. It is known that the incident which took place afternoon of August 29 was in behest of the management of company.

GEFONT – ITGWUN workers in the Narayani Rolling Mills were on strike with 7-point demands, including permanent status to their jobs and minimum wage. The clash between the management and the workers had started on 28 August. Police had baton charged on the protesting workers causing injuries to dozens of workers. Naturally, furious workers resumed demonstration against the police brutality from early morning on 29 August.

August 22- A Trade Union delegation comprise with leaders of GEFONT, NTUC-I and CoNEP met the newly elected Prime Minister and handed over a cheque worth Rs 251,000 to Prime Minister Relief fund for flood Victims of Sunsari Districts of Eastern Nepal.

August 9 - GEFONT express heart felt condolence to former National Committee Member, ITWAN founder Central Committee Member as well as Advisor Comrade Yogeshwor Saha, 80 yrs who suddenly demise at Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital. GEFONT extends its condolence to the bereaved family. Comrade had two sons and two daughters.

GEFONT National Council directs to form Federal Council of Affiliates

July 1– Two days, GEFONT Ninth National Council Meeting was concluded with new adopted programme for transitional period. Inaugurating, the interaction seminar entitled "Trade Unions in Federal Democratic Republic Nepal" CPN-UML General Secretary Jhalanath Khanal focused on unity of working class to unify the Nation. He stated "Working class can bring unity in nation by unifying people in every level. The more working class will united the more nation will be unified with strong sovereign and positive changes in society."
