Nepal Independent Workers' Union (NIWU)
With the historical students' movement of 1979 big or small workers' movements were rippled all over the country including industrial cities such as Kathmandu, Hetaunda and Biratnagar. The agitating workers organised the first National cadres' Conference in 29th January, 1980 at Balaju Industrial Districts and established a Nepal Independent Workers' Union (as a good successor of All Nepal Trade Union Congress established in 1947). This is the oldest federation among the GEFONT affiliates.
This Federation is one of the major, among the four founder Federations of GEFONT and has been registered as the first Trade Union Federation on 24 November, 1994.
Initially this federation had been organising all of the industrial workers; however from 1998 it's constituency was mainly limited to general natures of industries such as leather products, shoes, slippers, tobacco, cigarettes, brick and tile factories, hum pipes, pebbles and stone industries, wood carvings, manual art industries, furniture and plywood industries, tent and tarpaulin industries, dry cleaning, colour lab, theatres, matches industry etc.
Nationally affiliated to GEFONT, this federation has also been internationally affiliated with Global Union Federation for the workers of textile, garments and leather industries- International Textile, Garment Leather Workers' Federation (ITGLWF) since November 2003.
