Oct. 07- The ITUC affiliates- GEFONT and NTUC- I jointly organised a round-table discussion marking the World Day for Decent Work (WDDW)-2009. The aim was- preparation of this year's decent work agendas for Nepal.
"Today trade unions around the world are putting forward demands for action from governments in their own national economies, and internationally"; presenting the keynote GEFONT president Com. Bishnu Rimal highlighted different aspects of WDDW.
"Decent Work is defined as a job which enables a person to live a good life. It is a concept and an agenda introduced by the ILO in 1999, which consists of four components- employment, rights, protection and dialogue. "
He further said- this year, world trade union movement is marking wddw under the theme- Financial crisis and how decent work is central to ending the crisis. We Nepali trade union centres are finalising our agendas as sub-themes for whole year. Your views, as the participants of this strategic discussion will be Key to us during JTUCC meeting in order to finalisation of our agendas. "
He highlighted possible interventions and strategies on Decent Work Agendas in the context of Nepal.
Leaders from JTUCC family- ANTUF vice-chairman Baburam Gautam, NTUF president Ganga Ram Khadgi, FENEPT Secretary Roshan Rana, and NDCONT General Secretary Hikmat Jung Bhandari expressed their solidarity to make grand success of the WWDW. They were in common commitment that JTUCC will finalise concrete decent work agendas for next one year.
NTUC-I Senior vice-president Ramji Kunwar made a concluding note with offering vote of thank to all of the participants.
Altogether 84 participants from both national centres –GEFONT and NTUC- I including the Media persons participated in the Programme. About dozen of them made their intervention with suggestion and recommendations.
On the occasion Nepali version of WDDW guide also distributed. The programme was organised at United World Trade Centre, Tripureshwar Kathmandu.
On the evening GEFONT President Bishnu Rimal and ANTUF Vice chair Baburam Gautam participate in a live talk show at private TV channel ABC TV. Both leaders highlighted meaning of Decent work for Nepal.
The ITUC had decided at its founding congress that it should take strong, global action for a new globalisation– one where profits are not made from exploiting workers and where fundamental workers’ rights are respected. WDDW is the outcome of this decision.
Last year GEFONT had organised a Regional Conference of Women Trade Unionists concentrating on decent work for woman workers.
