Fifth National Congress Concluded GEFONT New leadership elected

April 08- Kathmandu, GEFONT’S Fifth National Congress  concluded in grandeur way with meet-the-press programme. The Congress has elected Com. Bishnu Rimal as new President and Com. Umesh Upadhyaya as new Secretary General. The Congress elected 53-member National Executive Committee, where Com. Binod Shrestha has been elected as Senior Vice President. The Congress has ensured 33% representation electing 34% women at the NEC.

The Congress has adopted policy document entitled- "Unity for Transformation: Direction of Nepali Trade Union Movement" along with secretariat report, amendment in statute, financial report and various resolutions.

The Congress was inaugurated by Guest of Honour Com. Jhalanath Khanal- the Chairman of CPN-UML and special guests of the Congress were Com. Astha Laxmi Shakya, Minister for Industry. Mr. Shengjie-Li, the Director of ILO Nepal office conveyed solidarity message sent by ILO Director General Juan Somavia on the occasion. Like wise solidarity message of Bro. Guy Ryder- the General Secretary of ITUC was also communicated.

Various leaders of national and international trade union movement extended their best wishes for the grand success of the congress addressing the inaugural session.

In the evening, an interaction programme with international delegates and the media persons was organised. Outgoing Vice-chair Bishnu Rimal presented key note on "Trade Union Unity for Social Transformation: Some reflection by GEFONT Policy document" where Bro. N. Suzuki, the General Secretary of ITUC-AP, Bro. Pong Sul-Ahn  of  ILO-SRO and Bro. Dev Raj Dahal of FES- Nepal were key panelists. There was special presence of Com. Lekha Raj Bhatta, Minister for Labour and Transport management and Com. Ganesh Shah, Minister for Science & technology along with Mr. Kush Kr Joshi, the President of Employers organisation- FNCCI.

Altogether 700 Congress delegates across the country with one third woman delegates and 45 International guests from various trade union organizations from the continents of America, Europe and Asia participated in the Congress.

The Congress has amended statute with new provision "National Congress Delegates Council". Outgoing Chairman Com. Mukunda Neupane and Vice-chair Com. Lalit Kumar Basnet will resume the post of Chief and deputy of Delegates’ Council.
