July 23 - Training on protection and rights of migrant workers organised by GEFONT has been concluded in Kathmandu. The aim was to develop GEFONT members as a campaigner for safe migration.
Addressing the Inaugural session, as Chief guest Cde. Umesh Upadhyaya Secretary General said "Remittance sent by Migrant workers has contributed for the economic development of country but Government is not aware on migrant workers issue."
Secretary General further added-"GEFONT has been working for safe migration since 1995 and supporting the Nepali migrant workers who are in troubles and victimised through GEFONT support Group with the coordination of local Unions. GEFONT has signed MoU with trade unions of Korea, Malaysia, Bahrain and Kuwait with the aim of ptotecting rights of Nepali Migrant workers.
In the programme, Cde. Pemba Lama Deputy Secretary General highlighted the GEFONT campaign on decent work and safe migration.
The training sessions were facilitated by Mr. Floro Fransisko from LO/Norway on international migration trend and roles of trade unions for safe migration. Cde.Ramesh Badal, Secretary department of Foreign affairs GEFONT,Cde. Nisha Baniya GEFONT Migrant Desk, Cde. Bidur Karki Secretary Education department GEFONT, Cde. Samar Thapa and Cde. Bajra Rai GEFONT migrant desk on basic information on migration, GEFONT and its work on migration, Preparation technique before departure, Technique on Secure foreign employment and travel, Foreign employment Law & policy, Information about the destination, Right and responsibility of workers.
Altogether32 members from GEFONT zonal and district had participated in training.
