June 11 - South Asia Second Regional Meeting has been concluded in Kathmandu with the objective to strengthen the International and Regional network in Textile & Garments sectors and share the experiences of Unions in South Asia.
Delivering welcome speech, Chief Guest Cde. Bishnu Rimal- President of GEFONT conveyed his best wishes to all representatives from South Asia and Denmark for productive and fruitful meeting. President also briefed about Nepali Trade Union Movement and current political scenario.
Textile & Garment Unions of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka presented their country report with union situation and achievements. On Behalf of ITGWUN, Coordinator Ms. Deepa Dawadi briefed about ITGWUN, its activities, socio economic condition of country, problems and challenges faced as well as achievement made so far.
Mr. Flemming Hansen, 3F South Asia Regional Coordinator shared experience on Regional and International Networks and discussed how to strengthen these networks and relation for the betterment of Textile and Garment sectors in south Asia.
During Meeting, Mr. Jesper Nielsen, International Advisor of 3F, presented the International Advocacy Campaigns- Trade Union experience and lessons learn from defending worker’s rights in the textile and garment sector. Meeting also discussed about the possible future regional structure of the new GUF- IndustriALL and about possible joint efforts during IndustriALL Congress in Copenhagen.
Ms. Tina Kristensen, International Consultant of LO/FTF Council introduced LO/FTF council and its Support in South Asia. She highlighted the activities of LO/FTF council in Nepal, National Trade Unions Centres and achievements of JTUCC in Nepal.
Concluding the Meeting, Mr. Dharmananda Sanjel- President of ITGWUN appreciated all participants for their valuable inputs in the meeting and expected that all partners will implement the decision made during the meeting and support to expand international and regional network to strengthen the textile & garment sector in south Asia.
The Meeting has been hosted by GEFONT Affiliate Independent Textile and Garment Workers Union of Nepal (ITGWUN) in association with United Federation of Danish Workers (3F). There are eight unions of South Asia relating to the textile & garments sectors, involved in this cooperation- ITGWUN & ANGTWU from Nepal, FTZ & GSEU from Srilanka and NGWF, BGWUC, BIGUF & UFGW from Bangladesh. Total 22 participants including leaders and program coordinators from these Unions participated the Regional Meeting.
