Life without Cause is a life without an effect : GEFONT distribute award to distinguished Trade Unionists

May 06 – GEFONT has distributed awards to the distinguished Trade Unionist for their valuable contribution in Trade union movement during the 'First award distribution ceremony' held in Alpha-Beta Complex Baneshwor, Kathmandu.

 

Two different awards had been established last year in the names of two founding members of GEFONT Late Cde. Nuru Wangchhu Sherpa and Late Cde. Madhav Neupane who contributed lot for achieving heights of the Federation.

 

Nuru Wangchhu Sherpa who was one of the Co-founder member of GEFONT and then president of Trekking worker's Association expired in 1989 while climbing Mt.Dhaulagiri. It was decided that the award will be given to a brave & courageous Trade Unionist.

 

Thus, Nuru Wangchhu Sherpa Memorial Award was given to Cde.Dorje Khatri –Central committee member of GEFONT affiliate UNITRAV for  his Courageous work.

 

Cde. Dorje  is the first person who has waved the workers Flags in the Top of the world. Cde. Dorjey had  already waved  the Flags of GEFONT and GEFONT affiliates UNITRAV, CUPPEC and NATU  at The Mount Everest.

 

Last Year, Cde.Dorje waved the Flag of ITUC with the purpose  to demonstrate trade unions worry on climate change : the mission was  to draw attention of international community that our planate is melting down, which possibly resulting ramification to our future generation.

 

Similarly, Cde. Madhav  Neupane who expired in October 2010,  was involved in different activities of GEFONT from its establishment to his last date. He spent total 21 years in the service of the Confederation. He was one of the nine GEFONT founders and one of the twelve selected union educators. He represented GEFONT in different forums both at national and international level. He was one of the four leaders of newly launched "GEFONT Veteran Network" and has contributed total 31 years of his life to cultivate Nepali Union movement.It was decided that the award will be given to best organisor.

 

Thus, Madhav Neupane memorial award was given to Cde. Suntali Chaudhary-member of GEFONT Mahakali Zonal Committee as best organiser. Cde. Suntali, who has been working since last 12 years to organise ex-Kamaiya in Trade Union movement, herself an ex-kamaiya.

 

Similarly, GEFONT also distributed Ganga Devi Memorial Scholarship and Ganga Devi Memorial Health Assistance.

 

Ganga Devi Memorial scholarship  was given to Nayan Pokhrel, son of Gopal Pokhrel- member of GEFONT affiliate CUPPEC  and Ganga devi Memorial health Assistance was given to Cde. Shamsher Karki who had lost his two hands during the his work as machine operator in press institute.

 

Awards include Cash,Trophy & Certificate were given by Cde. Bishnu Rimal  president of GEFONT in the presence of family members of Late Founders. 

 

Handing over the awards president of GEFONT said" during  these 23 years of GEFONT, we have lost many friends who paid valuable contribution to reach Nepali trade union movement in this stage. Now, Physically they are not with us, but in our memory. Their contribution and the way they showed, inspire us to move ahead."

 

President also highlighted the selection process & criteria for the award.

 

During the programme, Documentary on Late Madhav Neupane and Nuru Bangchhu Sherpa was also screened.

 

Altogether 155  representatives from Trade unions, CA members, Advocates, Women leaders, Government, Civil Society and Media personals, Family members of Late.Cde Nuru and Late Cde.Madhav  had participated in the programme.

 

The Programme was condcuted by Cde. Umesh Upadhyaya,Secretary General of GEFONT.
